Five things to do when keeping your vehicle in a storage unit

Keeping your vehicle in a storage unit is an excellent solution if you will not need it for some time and it needs to be stored securely and away from the elements. To get the best out of your storage experience, here are some simple tips that will help.

Clean the vehicle

Firstly, make sure the vehicle is clean when it goes into storage. You will not want to find it covered in mud or grease when you come to take it out. Besides, cleaning it will help to keep it in a good condition. If there is any dirt or muck on the vehicle when you put it away, it could wear away the paint while it is being stored. You should also clean the inside of the vehicle to ensure that you pick it up in top condition.

Fill the tank

Secondly, make sure that you have a full fuel tank when the car goes into storage. As well as making things easier when you drive it away, this will also prevent moisture from building up in the tank which could cause rust and corrosion.

Leave the handbrake off

When leaving the vehicle, don't engage the handbrake or parking brake if you are storing the vehicle for long periods of time. Although you should use it in the short term, it may seize up if you leave it on for too long. This could require an expensive repair when you come to use the vehicle again. Instead, secure the vehicle with tyre stoppers or wedges.

Cover the vehicle

Next, make sure that the vehicle is covered while it is in storage. Dust will settle on it over time and could damage the paintwork. At the very least you will have to clean it again when you collect it. Although you can buy specially made vehicle covers, old sheets or plastic sheeting will do the job just as well.

Run the engine

Finally, don't just leave the vehicle and forget about it. You should start it up regularly to ensure the battery remains charged. For example, you should give it a short drive, but just letting the engine run for a few minutes will be enough. Never leave the engine running inside the unit though — drive it outside to prevent a build-up of carbon monoxide.

Make sure you check with the storage facility that the units are suitable for vehicles. They will be happy to give further advice if you are unsure about how to store your vehicle. Contact a vehicle storage company near you to learn more.
