Key Elements to Look for in Security Screen Doors

Would you like to install security doors in your home or office?  Well, one type of security doors you can consider is the security screen door. Security screen doors are designed to offer a beautiful appearance and protection from bugs, weather, and criminals. But before you can install these doors, there are various factors and features you have to keep in mind. Here is what you should know as you go shopping.

Material for the door frame

Most frames for security screen doors are made of aluminium, steel or a metal alloy. Every material can be designed to be strong enough to function as a security door. However, aluminium and metal alloy frames tend to be weaker compared to steel. So to be stronger, the frames must be made wider.

Aluminium doors don't rust, making them more costly. But, if a steel door is treated properly and powder coated, they won't show signs of rust for up to ten years. If signs of corrosion are noticed, the frame can be recoated.

Powder-coat or paint the door

Typically, paint isn't heat resistant or heat tested, meaning it will not hold up effectively under the sun. Choosing a painted door means adding another maintenance item to cater for.

On the other hand, a powder coat is applied to the door as a dry, free-flowing powder. Powder coating and paint are very different since a powder coat doesn't need a solvent to keep the filler parts and binder in a liquid state like paint. Powder coats are applied electrostatically and cured under heat, allowing it to form a skin. This creates a strong/hard finish that is tough compared to conventional paint. The screen frames and screws should also be coated to make sure everything matches in colour and lasts longer.

Which additional features should you seek?

Closersensure your security screen door has a pneumatic closer for pulling it shut.

Mitred cornersthe corners of your screen door should be solid steel both on the top and bottom, rather than being hollow. Hollow corners allow water to penetrate the frame, which will lead to corrosion. Rust may also cause stains on the sidewalk or stoop. In case you decide to go for a tube-frame mounting ensure the tube frame comes with mitred corners.

Wind chainsthey prevent wind from blowing the door open too far.

Matching keys—consider asking the installer to rekey your security door to match the entry door key to avoid using two keys.
